Master Lectures

The Master Lectures Series aim to complement the exhibition by acknowledging extraordinary hybrids. The 3 distinguished speakers have crossed boundaries and succeeded in their quest to be multi-disciplinary creatives. They bravely answer the call to steep oneself in unfamiliar territory, creating things unbounded by disciplinary definitions and inspire others to embrace change.

Their ability to adapt to new challenges, while navigating unfamiliar environments shows the novelty in their evolution as creatives. Their existence embodies what Unnatural Phenomena is all about.

Date: 6th March 2019
Time: 1330 – 1445 hrs
Location: National Design Centre, Auditorium L2 , 111 Middle Road (Singapore 188969)

Fee (before GST): $40 (Singapore-based Students) | $50 (Trade)

The goal of the lecture is to broaden the audience’s intellectual and critical understanding of the role of design in society. Taking Atelier Manferdini creative process and professional practice as a point of departure, this lecture will focus on the specific effectiveness of visual languages to formulate alternative realities (drawings and pictures will be at the center of the lecture).

In this age of mediated communication, revealing the truth or creating a dialectic opposition is no more the engine for novelty, nor change.  The lecture argues that creativity is one of the fundament ability that designers have to promote alternatives to reality. The act of imagining is a fundamental civic act done by the designer, that recognises that problems can’t be solved by an atrophied collective imagination. And such collective imagination has to be continuously trained.

About Speaker:

Principal and owner of Atelier Manferdini, Elena Manferdini has over fifteen years of professional experience in architecture, art, design, and education. She is a licensed engineer in Italy, and a licensed architect in Switzerland. She received a Professional Engineering Degree from the University of Civil Engineering (Bologna, Italy) and a Master of Architecture and Urban Design from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

Breaking Out: Making and Experiencing Art in Non-Traditional Contexts

Date: 6th March 2019
Time: 1500 – 1615 hrs
Location: National Design Centre, Auditorium L2 , 111 Middle Road (Singapore 188969)

Fee (before GST): $40 (Singapore-based Students) | $50 (Trade)

Where do artforms begin and end? What determines how they’re experienced? These are among the questions art director Raffi Lehrer will explore in a discussion of his multidisciplinary approach to art production and curation. From his own background in sculpture and furniture design, to his work with artist-designers the Haas Brothers and Coachella producers Goldenvoice, Lehrer is guided by an interest in straddling art and design, and exploring how art is experienced in non-traditional contexts.

The lecture will examine the teams and processes with which he has worked, focusing on how art objects and activations can explore and reframe how art and the public engage each other in today’s dynamic contexts.

It will showcase the creation processes behind projects including sculpture, furniture, lighting, activations, and large-scale installations. Lehrer will also touch upon his own cross disciplinary interests—ranging from photography to art and design—and how they play out in his work.

About Speaker:

Raffi Lehrer is the Associate Art Director for Goldenvoice, where he scours the globe for artists, architects, photographers, cultural institutions and designers to collaborate with on large-scale installations at various Goldenvoice festivals. In 2018, he collaborated with Edoardo Tresoldi, Simón Vega, The Huntington Library, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory - to name a few. These collaborations ranged in size from the extremely photogenic Etherea by Tresoldi at 22 meters tall to more intimate activations with the Huntington and JPL meant to connect patrons with research and cultural offerings at both LA institutions.
